Jermaine Dupri Says Ciara’s ‘I Bet’ Is A Rip-Off of Usher’s ‘U Got It Bad’; Ciara Responds

And the after effects of the Robin Thicke and Pharrell $7.4 million ‘Blurred Lines’ lawsuit begin. After the duo were found guilty by the jury of copying Marvin Gaye’s 1977 track ‘Got To Give It Up’, Jermaine Dupri is now coming forward with a claim but it’s not exactly related to the case.

Jermaine says he feels sympathetic to both Pharrell and Marvin Gaye’s family as he feels in Hip-Hop, the creators often make records influenced by songs from the past. He tells Associated Press:

“Younger producers like myself and Pharrell, we make records that are influenced by other records that are out there. “That’s how hip-hop has always been created – it has some kind of element of something (from) the past. Or sometimes we just take the entire sample and we give the artist the credit for that sample. We’ve all been in a position where it could go like this or we can give the producer the credit”

The hitmaker says although he is 50/50 on this case, he feels Ciara’s latest single ‘I Bet‘ is a “complete rip-off” of Usher’s massive 2001 hit ‘U Got It Bad‘ which he co-produced along with Bryan-Michael Cox. Dupri said he, Usher and Bryan-Michael Cox all noticed the similarities immediately upon hearing the song and says that part of ‘I Bet’ also sounds like R&B singer Tamia’s ‘Still‘ which is another song he produced. He plans to get in touch with Ciara and the producers to seek proper credit on the song.

Do you think Ciara’s ‘I Bet’ sounds like a copy of Usher’s ‘U Got It Bad’? Certain melodies are definitely similar.

In an interview with VH1 for the promotion of her new album Jackie (in stores today), Ciara responds to Jermaine’s criticism of the song.

Jermaine is Jermaine, and he wouldn’t be Jermaine if he didn’t express what he felt. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. I think it’s cool that it takes you back to that feeling, though. Sonically, it just gives you a really cool throwback feeling. But I think ‘I Bet’ is an original song.
